Episode 176: A Dora Like No Other

Northeast Tennessee Arrowhead (Indian Trail) Johnson City

The morning began like any other: 4 brave souls met in the gloom. The birds were silent. The air didn’t move. Even the moon refused to watch.

THE THANG

“They thought it was just a workout.

It was actually… a summoning.”

Scene I: The Possessed Playground

Pairs were formed—not out of camaraderie, but survival instinct. One man climbed atop a concrete altar (also known as a coupon) and performed cursed elevated merkins, while the other sprinted toward the swing set to perform 10 underdogs. You know, that innocent little exercise that turns into a demonic back-and-core exorcism when performed in the dark while sweat blinds you. Two rounds. No forgiveness. The swings swayed even when no one was on them.

Scene II: Descent to the Sacrifice Ground

We descended the hill. The fog (which wasn’t technically there but we felt it in our souls) clung to our legs.

A standard Dora, they said.

  • 100 Bent-Over Rows: every rep pulled the ghosts of failed workouts past closer to the surface.
  • 200 Mountain Climbers: summoning spirits one knee-drive at a time.
  • 300 Squats: because nothing says “ritual suffering” like watching your quads detach from reality.

While one partner worked, the other ascended to the midpoint of the hill—a place rumored to be cursed since a 2007 bootcamp ended in tears and cramping.

Scene III: The Hill Awakens

We weren’t done. The hill had tasted our sweat and wanted more.

Dora #2. Midpoint staging area. No turning back.

  • 100 Curls with the cinderblock of despair while your partner ran to the 4th tree—a tree not on any map, one that whispers secrets to those who listen too long.
  • 200 Freddy Mercurys: laughter turned to screams (or maybe just heavy breathing—hard to tell in the dark).

The third round never came. Not because we ran out of time, but because the hill took it back.

Final Scene: The Silent March

We returned to the flag, but not as the same men. Something changed out there. Something followed.

We spoke with shaky voices and avoided eye contact. The real horror wasn’t what we endured. It was knowing…

we’ll be back.
