Northeast Tennessee

Episode 183: The “Magnificent” 7

Northeast Tennessee Arrowhead (Indian Trail) Johnson City

They came at dawn. Seven riders, cloaked in sweat and shadows, answering a silent call that echoes every Thursday in the gloom.

  • Jester — the wild card with a crooked grin.
  • Jobs — steady, dependable, like a Winchester rifle.
  • Jake — quick on the draw, quicker on the mumblechatter.
  • Treble Maker — the loud one, rattling spurs wherever he goes.
  • Zippo — twice over, like a fire that refuses to go out.
  • Gutterball — rolling heavy, knocking down excuses.
  • Bobber — steady in the water, unshaken no matter how rough the current.

THE THANG

After a warmup to loosen the saddles, the Seven set out across the frontier of the schoolyard.

The Carline Gauntlet

At the twelve post, five merkins to mark the duel. Then the long gallop to one, where ten LBCs waited like bandits in the dust. Back and forth they rode, retreating step by step through the numbers until seven was conquered. The battle shifted—squat jumps at six, dwindling down to one, always returning to the ten-count of LBCs. Each man bore it like trail dust in his lungs.

The Island of Trials (aka The Taint)

The posse split in twos. One dropped anchor with ten carolina dry docks, while his partner sprinted the length of that cursed island, Freddy Mercuries marking the passage of time until the swap. Twice they crossed, twice they endured.

The Hill of Reckoning

No western tale is complete without a hill to be taken. One man clawed upward, five curb merkins per arm at the summit, while his partner kept the line with imperial squat walkers. Then they traded—two rounds, two victories.

The Swing Set Showdown

The Seven faced the underdogs, grinding out reps beneath the creak of chains. Then they crossed the lot under the weight of Mike Tysons, every punch against the blacktop another shot fired in the standoff.

MARY

Time was short, the sun climbing high. Only a 30-second plank remained, each man holding firm like gunslingers who knew they’d done enough to send the Sad Clowns packing—at least until the next ride.
