On this, YHC’s 40th birthday, it was important to commemorate the event in some way. Fortunately, YHC’s date of birth (10-10-77) is conveniently symmetrical for counting purposes, so the Pax were treated to a round of 10-10-7-7’s. Starting at one end of the parking lot, Pax did 1 Burpee, then ran to the other end to do 10 Imperial Squat Walkers. This was followed by 2 Burpees at the starting point, 9 Imperial Squat Walkers, and so forth, until the count reached 10 Burpees, 1 Imperial Squat Walker.

2 Laps around the circle.

Next, Pax did 1 Merkin, ran to the other end of the parking lot and did 7 lunges, proceeding as above until the count was 7 Merkins, 1 lunge.

1 Lap around the circle.

The Thang concluded with a 40 Relay. Pax divided into 1’s and 2’s and lined up at opposite sides of the field, 40 paces apart. One by one, Pax bear crawled to the other side, where a Pax would then head in the opposite direction, relay-style. While 1’s made their way across the field, Pax held the Al Gore position. While 2’s crawled, Pax held a plank position.

When I was a kid, I remember thinking that 40 was basically the end of the road. This morning, surrounded by a good group of men, who push me and inspire me and encourage me to be better, I’m reminded of how fortunate I am, and am struck by the realization that God still has plans for me. I know mid-life crisis is supposed to be a thing, but I have so much to be thankful for, and I’m looking ahead in hopeful anticipation to continuing to grow in faith, in leadership, and in the work God has given me to do.
