July 2, 1776

July 2, 1776 was the day when the Second Continental Congress voted to approve a resolution of independence, declaring the Thirteen Colonies free and independent from Great Britain. The resolution was proposed by Richard Henry Lee of Virginia in June134. The official announcement of independence, known as the Declaration of Independence, was adopted two days later, on July 4, after some revisions.
